Best radar detector, best laser detection.Though the Valentine One has its share of critics, most also begrudgingly agree that this radar detector has few weaknesses. Some complain that the Valentine One generates too many false alerts, but others say that its sensitivity means it can spot radar traps that other detectors miss. In tests, the Valentine One usually sits at the top in terms of range, meaning drivers have plenty of time to adjust their speed. It has unsurpassed performance when tested against POP radar guns, and is the very best laser detector currently available -- which can be helpful if the Valentine One is paired with a laser countermeasure such as a laser jammer or anti-laser coating. Light-up arrows show the direction of potential threats and antennas look for radar both in front and toward the rear, but the Valentine One has few other bells and whistles. Best radar detector for professional drivers.While most passenger car drivers don't need to worry about the legality of their radar detectors, the situation is different for professional drivers, since radar detectors are banned by Federal law in trucks over 10,000 pounds. The Beltronics STi Driver is unsurpassed in hiding its presence from radar detector detectors (RDDs), with tests showing no readings all the way to the radar gun, even when the latest RDD is used. The STi Driver is a solid performer in most other ways as well, picking up radar signals far enough away from the gun to give drivers lots of time to slow down. It's also a good performer when it comes to laser detection, though not quite as good as the Escort 9500i, and it is significantly inferior to the Valentine One in that regard. Best value.The Beltronics Pro RX65 is not as effective in detecting laser as the Valentine One. It's not as good as defeating radar detector detectors as the Beltronics STi Driver, or in suppressing false alerts as the Escort Passport 9500i. Furthermore, the alert range of the Beltronics Pro is somewhat shorter than all three. However, it costs a bit less and is still a competent performer that will give drivers plenty of time to react to most alerts. The Beltronics pro RX65 is feature packed, including programmable voice alerts and Ku band capabilities for European use (Ku band radar is not used in the U.S.). It also has a city mode, which reduces false alarms, and it comes with a hard carrying case. Other features include a multiple-threat alarm, which can tell you if more than one type of radar gun is detected. Best budget laser detector.While no review says the Whistler XTR-690 is as good as the top performing radar detectors, most say that it's a good budget radar detector that will give drivers just enough notice to react to upcoming traps. A weakness in detecting instant-on 33.8 GHz Ka band radar is troubling, but as experts note, that band is rarely used in the United States. The Whistler XTR-690 does a great job of hiding from radar detector detectors -- second only to the Beltronics STi Driver in that regard -- making it an especially good budget choice for professional drivers or passenger car drivers in those few jurisdictions where radar detectors themselves are illegal. The Whistler Pro 78 is largely similar, but has a higher quality display.
